  20. Get 1 1/2 cup Boiled toor dal
  21. Take 1 tsp Turmeric powder
  22. Get 1 tbsp Red chilli powder
  23. Prepare 1 tbsp Coriander-Cumin powder
  24. Make ready 1 small piece Jaggery
  25. Make ready As per taste Salt
  26. Prepare As required Water
  27. Get For Tempering
  28. Prepare 1 tbsp Oil
  29. Take 1 tsp Mustard seeds
  30. Get 1 tsp Jeera
  31. Get 10-15 Curry leaves
  32. Take Pinch Asafoetida
  33. Make ready 1 tsp Red chilli powder
  34. Prepare 1 tbsp Urad dal

We already have seen sambar recipe. But today we will make udupi style sambar. We alsp will be preparing fresh sambar masala that tastes just awesome and gives nice flavour to sambar. udupi style sambar is a new sambar recipe without the use of homemade sambar powder.

Instructions to make Udupi Temple Style Sambar:
  1. For Sambar Powder: In a pan add all the ingredients mentioned for sambar powder. Saute till it leaves the fragrance. Let it cool. Do not add coconut.
  2. Once it's cooled, transfer it into the mixer jar and grind well. Now add coconut and grind well. Add water and grind it into a fine paste.
  3. For making sambar: Take a pan, add oil, add all the vegetables and let it cook for 10 minutes.
  4. Now add the tamarind extract and cook it for another 10 minutes.
  5. Now add the prepared sambar paste and cook till it leaves oil.
  6. Now add the boiled toor dal, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, coriander-cumin powder, salt, jaggery and mix it properly.
  7. Let it boil for 10 minutes.
  8. For Tempering: In a small pan take oil, and add all the ingredients mentioned for tempering. Add it to the boiling sambar.
  9. Sambar is ready. Serve hot with boiled rice. Enjoy!!

I recently tasted this sambar in a friend's house who is a native of bangalore. The sambar was very different, aromatic and yum. when i asked her any special sambar powder you make for this , she said that this udipi sambar is without sambar. Udupi , apart fom being a temple town is popular for its cuisine. Udupi restuarants are popular world wide. Usually Udupi Sambar is sweetish in taste , with mild spiciness , no onion - garlic and lots of coconut.
